01 — Challenge
Adding to an existing CAD system
Marvis Yachting builds custom yachts and professional ships using modern CNC technology. For years it has worked successfully with a parametric ShipConstructor, AutoCAD and MultiSurf system, with parts produced on a CNC plasma cutter.
In 2007 Tobias was asked to model the portal mast of the multi-purpose shelter-deck trawler Grietje, and to lay out its parts for production.
02 — Approach
From 2D to 3D to plasma cutter
The mast was converted from 2D drawings into a 3D model, and its parts were laid out for CNC plasma cutting. A good example of how the flexible use of Rhino can support an existing CAD system rather than replace it.

03 — The work
Visualisation with a practical purpose
In high-end yacht building 3D visualisation is common; in professional shipbuilding it is seldom used. The portal-mast model showed it can have very practical benefits: views from the deck up to the wheelhouse and back answered the new owner’s question — what can I see of my crew down on deck, and can they see me?
In the end Tobias also modelled the navigation mast and the lettering and stripes on the bow — live, with the owner sitting next to him.
In his words
“It’s so great how easy you can move objects around on the hull with Rhino, till the client is perfectly satisfied.”

04 — Outcome
3D for professional ships, too
Grietje shows that 3D design has a future even in building ships for professionals — and how Tobias’s services can support an existing CAD system.
